Sr R&D Engineer

Salary: $86000 - 135000 per year Requirements: We require a bachelors degree in electrical, mechanical, or power engineering; an advanced degree is preferred. We look for 8+ years of progressive engineering design and/or development experience on highly technical, innovative projects. We need strong time-management skills and the ability to prioritize independently with minimal supervision. We expect working knowledge of electromechanical product design and development. We value experience with switchgear and/or controls. We require experience with medium- and high-voltage electrical power systems. We need demonstrated strength in complex analysis and problem solving. We expect working knowledge of CAD and/or engineering analysis tools. We require familiarity with regulatory standards such as ANSI, IEEE, and IEC. We look for experience creating and reviewing DFMEA and PFMEA processes and documentation. We require experience developing projects within a Stage-Gate process. Industry association or standards committee participation is a plus. We expect proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project or equivalent tools. We require strong technical knowledge in current and voltage sensors, power systems, and molded mechanical parts. We need proven ability to write and edit technical documents, test reports, engineering standards, and industry papers. We require strong verbal and written communication skills. We expect the ability to respond quickly to strategic and tactical changes. Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Responsibilities: We develop concept proposals and complex designs for both existing and new product lines. We create innovative solutions that meet profitability, cost, quality, and time-to-market targets. We define design parameters, validate them against standards, and prepare technical documentation. We investigate ideas with potential patent value. We oversee validation and testing of components, systems, and assemblies throughout development. We build test plans based on D/PFMEA, project specifications, industry standards, and reliability and validation requirements for internal and external labs. We direct lab testing, analyze results, and prepare corrective action plans. We ensure designs satisfy specification and standards requirements while supporting error-proof assembly. We prepare written records of processes, material needs, test results, and project activities as needed. We understand and enforce regulatory documentation requirements. We work with outside vendors, consultants, and customers. We collaborate with third-party vendors to develop high-quality, lowest-cost design solutions. We continuously improve engineering processes, including DFX, project cost, product cost, quality, and lead times. We provide engineering support to Sales/Product Management and Manufacturing for new products and processes. We actively participate in and help facilitate the product development process. We may perform other duties as assigned. We are expanding our New Product Development efforts within Research and Development and are hiring a Senior R&D Engineer II to help bring advanced concepts from early development through production launch. Our products include vacuum circuit breakers, monitoring and sensing electronics, communications and software systems, switchgear, motor control, and safety-focused enclosure systems. With more than 75 years of leadership in vacuum switching technology and arc-flash safety, we design and manufacture across multiple facilities in the US, Canada, and the UK. One of our Houston-area facilities includes a prototyping shop and UL-certified high-voltage and high-current lab, giving us the ability to model and validate designs in real time. The role is based in a normal office environment with some work in our manufacturing shops and electrical test lab.
