About the role

Design and develop enterprise applications and APIs using Java and Spring for academic and research communities.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Analista de Sistemas Sr (Desenvolvedor Java) based in Brazil. As a Senior Systems Analyst (Java Developer), you will design, develop, and modernize enterprise applications and APIs that support academic, scientific, and research communities. You will play a key technical role in shaping software architecture, ensuring high standards of security, performance, scalability, and code quality. Working primarily with Java, Spring, and modern web technologies, you will contribute to system integration, legacy modernization, and continuous improvement across the software development lifecycle. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor developers, and help establish engineering best practices that drive reliable, maintainable solutions. The role also encourages the responsible use of artificial intelligence to accelerate development, improve testing, and streamline technical documentation. This is an opportunity to apply your technical expertise to meaningful digital infrastructure projects in a collaborative, remote-first environment that supports education, research, and innovation across Brazil.
Accountabilities:
Design and develop enterprise applications: Build, maintain, and evolve institutional systems and APIs using Java and the Spring ecosystem, ensuring high standards of code quality, security, performance, and reliability. Drive technical architecture: Participate in architectural and technical decisions, document design choices, and establish development practices that promote scalable, maintainable, and secure software. Modernize legacy systems: Lead initiatives to improve existing applications, reduce technical debt, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of software platforms. Integrate systems and services: Connect web portals, internal applications, third-party systems, and authentication services to ensure seamless interoperability across the technology ecosystem. Manage databases: Design, maintain, and optimize relational databases, including data modeling, query performance, and schema versioning. Promote software quality: Conduct code reviews, establish coding standards, implement automated testing strategies, and encourage continuous improvement across development teams. Mentor and support developers: Provide technical guidance to less experienced team members, share knowledge, and promote engineering excellence and collaborative problem-solving. Ensure application security and reliability: Address non-functional requirements, including security, availability, performance, and observability, while following secure development practices and identifying potential vulnerabilities. Leverage artificial intelligence: Use AI-powered development tools to accelerate coding, testing, code reviews, and documentation while maintaining appropriate safeguards for confidential information and source code. Participate in agile delivery: Contribute actively to Scrum or Kanban activities, technical refinement, estimation, and collaboration with business stakeholders to translate requirements into effective technical solutions. Collaborate on DevOps and automation: Work with DevOps teams to improve deployment processes, automate workflows, and strengthen continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. Support user-centered development: Collaborate with design teams to deliver accessible, functional, and consistent user interfaces, contributing to frontend development when required. Requirements: Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Systems Analysis and Development, or a related field. Professional experience: At least five years of proven backend development experience with Java, including modern versions such as Java 17 or later. Java and Spring expertise: Strong knowledge of the Spring ecosystem, particularly Spring Boot 3.x or later, Spring Security, and Spring Data JPA/Hibernate. API development and integration: Experience designing and developing REST APIs, documenting contracts with OpenAPI/Swagger, and applying effective API versioning and integration practices. Relational databases: Practical experience with PostgreSQL or SQL Server, including data modeling, query optimization, and database schema versioning using tools such as Flyway or Liquibase. Automated testing: Experience implementing unit and integration tests using tools such as JUnit, Mockito, and Testcontainers. Development tools and environments: Proficiency with Git, CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps, as well as Docker and Linux environments. Application security: Knowledge of secure software development practices, including the OWASP Top 10, secrets management, and dependency vulnerability analysis. AI-assisted development: Experience using AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or ChatGPT for code generation, review, testing, and documentation, with a responsible approach to data privacy and code confidentiality. Professional and interpersonal skills: Autonomy, initiative, accountability, effective communication, teamwork, and a willingness to mentor colleagues and share technical knowledge. Additional technical expertise (desirable): Experience with Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, and public cloud platforms, particularly AWS. Frontend development (desirable): Familiarity with Angular or React and the ability to collaborate effectively across frontend and backend development. Identity and access management (desirable): Knowledge of OAuth2, OpenID Connect, SAML, LDAP, identity providers, identity federation, and Keycloak. Observability and performance (desirable): Experience with OpenTelemetry, Micrometer, Prometheus, Grafana, Graylog, and load-testing tools such as JMeter, k6, or Gatling. Distributed systems (desirable): Familiarity with messaging and caching technologies such as RabbitMQ, Kafka, and Redis, as well as event-driven architectures. Legacy systems and documentation (desirable): Experience maintaining or modernizing legacy applications running on JBoss/WildFly or Tomcat, documenting architecture using C4 Model, PlantUML, or Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), and applying code quality tools such as SonarQube.
