Salary: $82000 - 124000 per year Requirements: We are looking for someone with 10+ years of experience managing advanced research computing systems. We need strong expertise in Linux system administration, installation, and troubleshooting. We require advanced scripting skills in bash, Python, and/or Perl. We need proficiency in HPC networking administration. We require strong experience managing software in an advanced research computing environment. We need experience supporting job scheduling and administration with SLURM in large-scale computing environments. We need excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage proactively and communicate across a broad stakeholder group. We need strong problem-solving ability for complex systems and infrastructure issues, along with the ability to share expertise across all levels. We value proven collaboration across teams to address systems and infrastructure challenges while balancing immediate operational needs with long-term technical and organizational goals. We require the ability to handle confidential data with strict privacy, security, and procedural compliance. We require a bachelors degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience. Preferred: experience in academic and research environments. Preferred: experience supporting AI-driven research in open and secure computing environments. Preferred: familiarity with data transfer tools such as Globus for large datasets. Preferred: experience with parallel file systems commonly used in HPC and AI systems. Preferred: experience supporting unstructured data in HPC and AI environments. Responsibilities: We will have you design, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve advanced HPC and AI cluster infrastructure, including high-performance interconnects, schedulers, and configuration management across research systems. We will ask you to partner with colleagues in Advanced Data and Storage Management to align scratch filesystem and data-management designs with cluster architecture. We will rely on you to develop data-transfer pathways and networking solutions that support AI-driven computing workloads. We will expect you to establish and uphold best practices for cluster administration and usage in support of AI workloads. We will have you create documentation for users and technical staff that can be shared across the wider community. We will ask you to expand monitoring infrastructure and related procedures for research computing systems. We will expect you to plan and carry out scheduled maintenance, including off-hour work when needed. We will assign additional duties as needed. We will look to you to define and guide the technical strategy for advanced AI and data-intensive HPC. We will ask you to apply creativity and sound judgment to anticipate and resolve complex, novel issues, set project requirements, and shape standards and governance across research computing platforms. We will count on you to evaluate, pilot, and implement researcher-facing systems that accelerate research through AI technologies. We will expect you to lead adoption of modern, automation-driven infrastructure and cluster management practices. We will rely on you to collaborate institution-wide as a subject-matter expert advising faculty, researchers, and vendors on emerging AI and research computing challenges. We will ask you to mentor systems specialists and analysts by sharing operational knowledge, design approaches, and technical expertise across HPC, AI, and data systems. We will expect you to contribute to the long-term vision for HPC and AI systems and advise senior leadership on investments, risks, and opportunities. We will have you monitor clusters, networks, and storage systems for irregularities and resolve issues. We will ask you to analyze and fix problems in Linux and HPC/AI environments involving software, data, and job submissions. We will expect you to use scripting and programming tools to diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues. In this leadership role, we work closely with faculty, researchers, vendors, and IT colleagues to design, deploy, administer, and advance HPC and AI technologies that strengthen research services. The position requires strong teamwork, independent initiative, and the ability to lead projects with general supervision. This role includes a mandatory on-call rotation with infrequent off-hour and weekend coverage.
